Robert Sherman – diss song new uke (5 plays)

To accompany my dissertation post below here is some audio related to it. It’s a little ukulele song that I have been toying with for days; it is much more musical than academic, though I have thought of a nice little story to go with it.

In the town of Loss, for various reasons, gods are reviled and ridiculed; they are seen as proponents of reason, an utterly hateful force, and superstition and hearsay are used to counter such effects. The recording is supposedly of a young musician from the town who is a secret deist; for those non-Latinates amongst us, in this case, this means a worshipper of gods. In the song, a homage to traditional folk songs that challenge and re-define conventional wisdom, the young man sings about the utter absurdity of his town, and the fear and awe he feels in the face of the gods. He mentions “Mr. Propp”, a reference to Vladmir Propp, the author of “Morphology of a Russian Folktale” and an authority on archetypes and folklore. It seems the boy has been doing some book learning, and starting to challenge his surroundings.

Anyway, its a nice little ditty all the same, and I hope you enjoy it.
